Antigua's gently undulating dry interior is bordered by a much indented coastline giving - it is claimed - 365 beaches, one for every day of the year. Although not as lush as St. Lucia or Grenada, the temperate weather and golden sands make Antigua one of the most popular Caribbean destinations. It is an excellent place for watersports enthusiasts, and especially sailing. Not a lot happens outside the hotels, so if you are looking for a lively time choose your hotel accordingly.

Getting About.
Car hire is easily arranged, although somewhat expensive, and a local licence is required which will be organised by the car hire company for a small charge. You will need to take your full British driving licence, and buy a good map -signposts are few and far between. Be prepared for a bumpy ride as the roads are very uneven. There is no regular public bus service, but taxis are readily available. Establish the price before you get in.

Places to visit.
Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour -Abandoned by the Royal Navy in 1889 and restored in 1961, Nelson's Dockyard is a conglomeration of old stone warehouses, workshops and quarters now filled with souvenir shops, hotels, restaurants and a museum. With the yachts out in the harbour it still retains a nautical charm.

Shirley Heights - Situated high above English Harbour and fortified to defend Antigua from invaders, Shirley Heights is now a look out point with fine views. It is also a regular venue for free Sunday afternoon/evening concerts by reggae or steel bands, popular with locals and visitors alike.

St. John's - The capital is fairly small but has a good choice of shops. Cruise ships dock here and the recently developed Heritage Quay is full of duty free shops, restaurants and a casino. Redcliffe Quay is also recommended for local shopping. A stroll downtown on a Saturday morning will take you to a colourful local market which is worth a visit.

Events.
Antigua Sailing Week.
End of April/early May. Yachtsmen from all over the world take part in regattas, racing and gala beach parties.
Carnival
Between 24th July and 3rd August 1999. Eleven days of local colour, culture and fun.
