Just 26 miles long by 7 miles
wide, Tobago was the setting for Daniel Defoe's "Robinson
Crusoe" and is everyone's ideal tropical island. It has
a thickly forested, mountainous interior, with fine sandy beaches
and hidden coves on the coast.
Scuba diving is particularly popular and the coral reefs are
quite spectacular, attracting divers from all over the world.
Birdwatching is also very rewarding in Tobago. Owing to the close
proximity of the island to South America, the diversity of species
is amazing.
Tourism is not well-developed here so don't expect slick efficiency;
shopping is limited and nightlife unsophisticated. The island
is reminiscent of the unspoilt Caribbean of twenty years ago.
But Tobago's simple friendly charm, and abundant natural beauty
will appeal to those seeking a get away from it all holiday.
Getting about
To really explore Tobago, car hire - particularly four-wheel
drive - is recommended. Bring your full British driving licence
and a Tropical Places representative will be able to arrange
a car for you.
