LES SABLES d'OLONNE : The major resort of the Vendee coast, Les Sables hasa majestic curved seafront, and is an impressive, rather grand resort, reminding you of a grander, more refined age. Famous for its cafes and quayside seafood restaurants, it comes to life at night. There is also a zoo: Parc Zoologique; route du Trachet, Les Sables d'Olonne Tel: 02.51.95.14.10 ST JEAN -DE-MONTS: the next largest resort of The Vendee, has lively bars, night clubs and an excellent relaxing beach. There is an open market square and a charming church. LA ROCHELLE : Ancient towers and ramparts guard the attractive harbour and lively streets. ILE-DE-RE: Known as the white island. Salt marshes and vineyards are the main livelihoods of the islanders. Steeped in tradition, many local women can still be seen wearing the white head dress which protects them from the sun. ILE-D'OLERON: France's second largest island (after Corsica). The main industry is oyster farming. You'll find lovely sandy beaches on its western coast. NOIRMOUTIER : The town of Noirmoutier is dominated by its chateau, which houses a museum devoted to local history. Lovely, unspoilt beaches, especially around the Bois de la chaise, where the pines and mimosa come down to the ocean, in a manner similar to the Riviera. A special place with a charming atmosphere. |
